Minutes of VPS General Membership Meeting: April 2004
The meeting was held at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester, VT on the day of the opening of the first annual group exhibition at SVAC by the Vermont Pastel Society. Fiona Cooper Fenwick presided. Attending the meeting were Fiona, Rene Schall, Skye Forest, Helene Amses, Anne Kreffer, Ramona Cook, D.A. Sweeney, and Mallory Rich. Marcia Wise came all the way from northern New Hampshire to attend the SVAC show.
The position of secretary was vacant. Mallory volunteered to serve as secretary, and to prepare and disseminate the minutes for each meeting, but because of her location in the southern part of the state, she may not be able to attend every meeting. She will need someone at each meeting to volunteer to take notes and send them to her. Skye agreed to do that at this meeting.
Rene reported that we have 53 members, including 8 from outside of Vermont.
MEETINGS
The Bob Carsten workshop was briefly discussed. The next meeting of the VPS will be held in conjunction with that workshop on 5/15 and 5/16 in central Vermont.
Two or three paint-outs may be scheduled for the summer in different geographical locations in the state. Volunteers were invited to organize a paint-out in their area. An indoor location or alternative (rain) date should be planned, or the event could be advertised as "weather permitting." Consider locations to include access to a bathroom and nearby parking. Ask painters to bring a bag lunch. In other words, make the day a simple opportunity to paint together. Mallory, Ann, Ramona and D.A. volunteered to try to plan a paint-out in southern Vermont for sometime this summer.
Rene wondered if members would attend a workshop exploring materials (paper, types of pastels, methods of working, etc.). She will e-mail members to establish interest. The Shelburne Craft School could provide good workshop space. Rene proposes contacting companies to get material samples that could be distributed to participants. This event could be planned in conjunction with a meeting. Rene will make this proposal to the members of the program committee.
EXHIBITION COMMITTEE
This committee needs a chair who will contact other members and organize. Fiona reports that she has been working solo on this committee, for the most part, using information sent to her by e-mail. She is not able to take on the role of chair at this time. Several members have expressed an interest in serving on the committee, and it is hoped that one of you will volunteer to serve as chair. Contact Fiona.
Among the possibilities for exhibitions for VPS:
* The Chaffee Center in Rutland may host a show in
2005. Wendy Soliday has contacted the Chaffee.
* The Mary Bryant Gallery in Jeffersonville could
host a show in 2005 if we send a proposal.
* The T. W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier requires an
application and proposal by 7/1/04. Helene Amses will prepare a
proposal.
* Shirley Reed Thompson offered the option of a show
in October 2004 at the Charlotte Senior Community Center. She needs
someone to work with her to organize the show. Please contact Fiona to
volunteer to assist.
* Sean Dye will assist in the coordination of plans
for a show in 2005 at the Apaline Gallery in Burlington.
* Fiona will contact the Helen Day Art Center in
Stowe. Applications are due there by February 1st.
* Mallory Rich offered to coordinate the SVAC show
in Manchester in 2005.
Rene suggested that the VPS hold a set of slides that are representative of each member's work. These slides could be submitted for upcoming exhibits that are juried. Rene will ask for two slides from each new and renewing member when membership renewal occurs in July. A member of the Exhibitions Committee would then catalog the slides and have them ready for distribution.
Please heed this call to serve as chair of the Exhibition Committee. As you can see, the work is outlined, and members have volunteered to do a lot of the work. Could you be the new coordinator?? Contact Fiona at 802-482-4067 or fionacinvt@aol.com
The meeting was adjourned so that members could attend the SVAC opening.
Respectfully submitted,
