Katrina Thorstensen
A native Californian transplanted to New England, Katrina Thorstensen brings an awareness of place and an artist's eye for color and light to her paintings. "I have always been an artist. Drawing and painting were my refuge and outlet growing up, and art has always been a part of my life. I was drawn to pastels because of their color intensity and immediacy of application. My paintings represent my exploration of color, light and place. Place has always been important to me, and I think I am not alone in this. The places in my paintings resonate for me in some way. Using the medium of pastel and working with color and light, I hope to convey the feeling of these places to the viewer."
Katrina has exhibited her paintings in a solo show at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. She was awarded the Canson Award in the Thirteenth Annual "For Pastels Only on Cape Cod, 2008", sponsored by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, and the Hunter Editions Award for Excellence in the Pastel Society of New Hampshire's "2008 New England Juried Show: It's Pastel" show.
She has also received the "Emerging Artist Award" in 2007 from the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and an honorable mention award in the 2007 Vermont Pastel Society juried show. She has shown in the National Northeast Pastel Exhibit, 2008, and will have a painting included in the "Renaissance in Pastels, 2008", a juried show sponsored by the Connecticut Pastel Society.
In addition to her art, Katrina works as a certified nurse-midwife at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, where she has provided care to women and families for over 20 years. She lives in Norwich,Vermont with her husband and daughter.
