My perspective on the kinds of pictures I paint has been influenced by many years of work in the graphic arts, namely letter design and calligraphy. My calligraphic work has been described as having an uncluttered elegance, a feeling for openness and space. I see this same quality appearing mysteriously in many of my pastel pictures. I enjoy painting quite ordinary subjects—calling attention to their unique details.
For years I’ve been collecting river stones when their shapes, shadows and colors catch my attention. With the larger ones I’ve built paths and rock gardens surrounding my home. I play around with smaller stones until I have an arrangement that appeals to me; these have turned into a series of stone still life pastel paintings. During my travels, I’m always fascinated by the endless variety of abstract shapes on rock walls and cliff faces. Photos help me remember the particular details when painting back in the studio.
