René Schall
After retiring from a career in letter design and calligraphy I decided to pursue a life-long desire to paint. An old pastel set got me started. Moving from two-dimensional design to portraying volume in space was a dramatic and satisfying change of direction. Among the qualities that are visually appealing to me are clarity, a sense of order, and abstract patterns.
For years I've been fascinated by river stones, rock walls and cliff faces; their shapes, shadows and colors never fail to catch my attention. Thus, it seemed only natural that I would choose stones and boulders as one the subjects I enjoy painting. Another interest is the subtle and dramatic variation of hues manifested in the qualities of wood. Photos help me remember particular details when working in my studio.
For several years, I've participated in the annual Solid Rock Exhibition at Studio Place Arts Gallery in Barre and have also exhibited paintings in group shows organized by the Vermont Pastel Society and Northern Vermont Artist Association.
