Many things influence my paintings but probably nothing as much as observing nature. I enjoy working with soft pastels, oils and acrylics and paint in both abstract and non-objective styles. Photography is a hobby and many of my own photographs are the basis for my paintings but I also like to paint in plein air at times. I enjoy building surfaces to achieve dramatic lighting and color and at times like using iridescent pastels to create patinas. That, no doubt, comes from graduate work in metals.
As a working artist and retired art educator, I continue to grow by exploring both rational and intuitive approaches in my creative process. Certainly I feel successful if the viewer finds a pleasant and perhaps spiritual connection in my paintings.
